Dial-up Internet Access

Dial-up Internet access allows you to connect your computer to the Internet by your normal telephone line. In order to do this your computer must have a modem fitted ( most computers are now fitted with these as standard ), you will also need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to allow you to access the Internet.

There are generally 2 ways that you can use an ISP to connect to the Internet :-

1. Pay as You Go - with this method you just pay for the time that you are connected to the Internet. You are normally given an 0845 telephone number to use and are then charged at a local telephone call rate. So normally this is 1p per minute at evenings and weekends (BUT always check with your telephone provider first as to what their charges are - the last thing you want is a large telephone bill).

This method of using the Internet is good if you don't use the Internet for long periods of time as their are no fixed fees to pay - you only pay for the time you are connected to the Internet. If you find you start to use the Internet a lot more or you would prefer a fixed fee per month then a monthly package deal would be better suited for you, read below for more information on this.

2. Fixed Monthly Fee - If you want to use the Internet without worrying if you are going to get a large telephone bill at the the end of the month you could use one of the fixed monthly fee ISPs. With this you pay a fixed fee every month regardless of how much you use the Internet (please read the terms & conditions of the ISPs first as some companies do put restrictions on how much time you can use the Internet in a month).

Using Dial-up Internet access will mean that while you are on the Internet you will not be able to make or receive normal telephone calls as your computer will be using your telephone line to connect to the Internet.
